Scheduled by the owner to follow the redesigned views: start after all of #148 is done.

From the phone check of #149: Sans looks much larger than Serif at the same text size.

Why

It isn't a bug. Both faces get the same pixel size (Theme.textSize, 18 px at 100%), but the fonts fill it differently:

Measured from the font files Ubuntu (the phone's sans) Crimson Pro (our serif) Ubuntu is larger by
Lowercase height (x-height) 0.518 em 0.420 em 23%
Capital height 0.693 em 0.573 em 21%
Average letter width, on a John 3:16 line 0.453 em 0.399 em 14%

Proposal

Scale Sans to about 85% of Serif's size, so 100% looks about the same in either face and switching doesn't jump. That sits between the height and width differences (81% and 88%); tune it from shots. Scaling Serif up instead would make the default text take more room and every chapter longer.

  • One factor in qml/theme/Theme.qml, used by the reading pane and the Text and layout sample.
  • The sample in qml/pages/TextLayoutPage.qml works out its own size today, so it has to take the same factor.
  • The reading pane is trunk, so it gets a full review and a phone check. Check that the verse at the top stays in place when switching faces, and that saved reading positions still restore.
